The Name

Five years. Three labels. One garment. One colour. California, 2026.
The standard is shared. The expression is not.

I

The First Garment

The first release is a single garment from adsurdam: the Modal Boxer, in Absolute Black.

The constraint was deliberate. A first object should be one its maker cannot hide behind: no styling, no novelty, no second piece to carry the first. A boxer is worn against the body, under everything, seen by almost no one. If the material, the cut, or the construction is wrong, there is nothing else to discuss.

Modal, because the body deserves a fabric chosen for how it falls and how it holds. Black, because it serves the body and asks nothing of the wearer.

II

Identity

SURDAM was founded in California in 2026 by Eron Hendrik Surdam. It has three labels: adsurdam, ETTARO SURDAM, and EH SURDAM.

SURDAM carries its founder's name. No other was chosen. Every alternative described a mood or a reference, and moods pass and references date. The surname described nothing and claimed only authorship.

A name that means nothing can hold everything. What it cannot do is hide. Every object made under it is answered for by the person it names.

III

The Name Before SURDAM

The name was in use long before clothing. It arrived from the Netherlands, and the family line has been documented in America for more than three centuries, recorded in Genealogy of the Surdam Family (1909). That history belongs to the family. SURDAM begins in 2026.

Before SURDAM, its founder worked in art, music, and design, each carried out on its own terms.

These fields share no product, but they share a method. Decide what a thing is for. Remove what does not serve it. Make what remains as well as it can be made.

The surname is inherited. The work is authored. SURDAM carries the name into a new discipline without asking it to mean something different. Over time, the discipline should come to mean more of the name.

IV

Development

SURDAM was five years in development before its first release.

Most of that time is invisible in the finished object. Samples made, measured, and corrected, then made again. Specifications rewritten until they could not be misread. Packaging reduced until it said only what it had to.

None of this is presented as hardship. It is simply what the work required.

V

On Restraint

SURDAM begins with one garment and one colour as a discipline of attention. Three labels, opened one at a time. A collection, begun with a single object.

Character is established by material, tension by proportion, and permanence by balance. All three are destroyed by excess.

Restraint is not the absence of ambition. It is ambition with its proof withheld until the proof exists.

VI

Origin

SURDAM belongs to the Pacific. Though the name traces to Europe, its founder's family traces to both sides of that ocean — Chinese by origin, Peruvian by passage — and it is based on the California coast, where those lines converge.

The name crossed the Atlantic. The family crossed the Pacific. SURDAM stands where the two arrived.

California is called the West, but its coast faces the other way. From here, the horizon is the Far East. The Pacific is a geography that precedes SURDAM, connecting places, generations, and histories long before it existed.

SURDAM does not merge these inheritances into a single style. It holds them, as the name does, without resolving them.
